We did our qualifying ride together. We got off to a late start but it was a start nonetheless. We had previously plotted out a course on live.com and found a some routes we had done on some nice trails around San Diego and estimated a route that would be about 50 miles. The ride was great, good scenery, plenty of people cheering us on, and the weather was good for the first bit. The sun went down about half way through the ride but our moral remained high, even when it started raining. We returned home thinking we had done enough for the day but when we got on and charted it we found we were about 30 kilometers short, the night riding and rain brought our distance rating up, but that left a lot to make up for the next day. In retrospect, (in other words: IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE YOUR QUALIFYING RIDE READ THIS) it would have been a much much better idea to ride with a gps unit, I still have a sneaking suspicion we shorted ourselves by quite a bit by charting it on live.com, and we definitely guessed on the low side of elevation change. But it was all we had and we went with it.
Oops again. After we shorted ourselves on the first day, we figured if we were supposed to do 125 the first day, and 150 the second day; we should do 275 total. So we "figured out" what we had to do and set out to do it, and well, this time we over shot it. Better safe than sorry. Each of us ended up ridding about 87 kilometers (once again, I'm pretty sure we are shorting ourselves by method of calculation) total on day two.
Upon return to Erik's house neither Jake nor I felt there was any need to take our unis out of Erik's car.
